Sometimes, we decide to go somewhere only to realize that it’s not open that day. (G: Totally my fault) Today, that happened. So we had to last-minute decide to go elsewhere. Turns out this place was PRETTY KICKASS.
This place is called Tempranillo, and it’s one of very few restos where we enjoyed every dish that we ordered. Every. One. You should go before it gets popular—they opened early this year, and it looks like Vancouver hasn’t caught on yet. They should though, if they know what’s good for them and their stomachs.
We started with burrata cheese drizzled with olive oil and Maldon salt, accompanied by a warm loaf of bread. Burrata is obviously amazing and if you can believe us, this was the least impressive out of the line up. Which is seriously saying something.
A few moments later we were presented with beef tenderloin carpaccio with a 65 c egg and truffle potato foam. That’s a mouthful and now we know why. This was so exquisite. Our entire table couldn’t believe how the flavours melded together, yet stood out spectacularly at the same damn time.
G: Can I lick the plate…
Dragonhead: I won’t judge you
Moving on to some hot food, this plate of fideos was quite sizable and filled with squid, piquillo peppers, and toasted fideos pasta cooked in octopus stock. Surprisingly, this didn’t have an overpowering seafood-y taste and the squid flesh was very tender and juicy.
We decided on some good ol’ chicken but this, again, is not your average chicken. Saffron-braised thighs thickened with almond picada and onions: this was absolutely exquisite. The pickled cucumber balanced nicely with the richness of the picada and the meat was almost falling off the bone. Now this is comfort food we’ll be coming back for again and again.
M: mmm yeah suck on that bone, it’s so fucking good.
G: [tries not to laugh] HAHAH
The four of us were getting full but we thought we could squeeze in ONE more dish and decided on the Denman island clams cooked in aged sherry, parsley and crisp serrano ham. O. M. G. this was bomb. The salty ham, herby parsley, and sour vinegar all came 2gether as 1 and sang Hallelujah in our mouths.
M: I can’t believe I’m actually enjoying clams
G: Are you… happy as a clam heheh okay I’ll shut up now
After a meal like this, it’s hard to feel bad about missing out on the dinner you originally intended to have. Tempranillo is also changing their menu to welcome the autumn season, and we unanimously agreed to return. 11/10 would recommend.
