After having a most enjoyable meal at Tempranillo, we walked a few blocks over to Chinatown to check out the new dairy-free/vegan and mostly organic gelato joint, Umaluma. The interior is all 60s/70s with dark wood and stucco paneling the walls, recycled glass counter-tops, and pale pastel pink everywhere.
We’d heard good things and were very happy to see the wide range of flavours. Some flavours are priced higher than others, depending on ingredient costs. The menu also indicates when a flavour contains honey, making it not vegan.
Mell took the longest to decide and ended up getting two scoops (they can’t do two flavours in one scoop—sad) of lavender dream and dark chocolate truffle. The dark chocolate is SERIOUS dark chocolate and also has a dark chocolate sauce marbled through the gelato. In fact, a lot of flavours have this and we ain’t mad
The lavender gelato is the colour of strawberries and is SO amazing. Also normally Mell would feel a little ill after having two scoops of regular ice cream, but her tummy was happy after eating this dairy-free gelato.
The twins (Grem & Dragonhead) of course grabbed the same flavour of macadamia chocolate.
Grace went with her usual salted caramel choice, which in this case was the salted caramel sea foam. #SoPredictable. It was surprisingly creamy, and every bit as delicious as the dairy alternative. What really stole the show though was the super-crunchy waffle cone. Who says vegans can’t eat well?!?
No seriously, we live in Vancouver. No one would say that.
