Kebin was back in town for a few precious weeks, so we had to stuff in a few foodie dates. Kebin is also a big meat-eater, so we had to be a bit… sneaky about taking him here. To Virtuous Pie. A vegan pizza place. Heh… heh… heh…
Virtuous Pie has a pretty extensive list of (very wittily named) pizzas, so Grem and Kebin kind of… let us and Dragonhead do the ordering. So trusting. 😈
It’s called the Stranger Wings pizza. How could we not order it?!?!?!? With Bianca, spicy buffalo cauliflower, crisp fried shallots, blue cheese drizzle, and scallions, this pizza was loaded with flavour. It was a unanimous thumbs up from the table.
Another easy choice for us: Kim Jack. SURE LET’S SEE HOW THIS FUSION THING WORKS OUT. We’re eternally hopeful that we’ll find a non-tacky version of these types of cultural + culinary blending.
With hoisin crema, cashew mozzarella, kimchi, Gochujang braised-jackfruit, roast brocollini, and scallions, it was like all our Asian-fusion dreams come true. The cashew mozzarella has a subtle cheese-like taste and texture, so we didn’t miss real cheese at any point.
We had to try and fool the guys somehow, so we wanted to try the fennel and sausage to really put Kebin and Grem (and the veggie sausage) to the test. This pizza comes with San Marzano tomato sauce, cashew mozzarella, Italian field roast sausage, roast fennel, and confit garlic.
Kebin: Is this… real sausage? It tastes strange. Hang on.
Grem: It’s a vegan place, isn’t it
The Ultraviolet pizza (walnut + arugula pesto, cashew mozzarella, oven-dried tomatoes, flowering kale, caramelized onion, pine nuts) not only had a cool name, it was also the most visually interesting pizza out of our picks.
Of course, with such a name, it then launched us into a spirited discussion about Ultraviolet vs. Aeon Flux—food always gets bonus points with us if it start conversations that lead somewhere surprising.
M: You guys know how I get after I eat. Can we go grab ice cream?
G: You do realize they have ice cream here…
M: FUCK NO okay imma brb
Of course Mell had to grab two scoops: coffee + donuts and matcha coconut.
Feelin all virtuous, she grabbed extra spoons for everyone to try. She preferred the coffee + donuts with chunks of real donuts, but both were delicious and she would get them again in a heartbeat. The rest of the table also approved so you know it’s legit.
With so many meat-eaters in tow for this meal, we were pleasantly surprised with the overall mood/satisfaction levels. Each individual pizza is the perfect portion size (pig out OR have breakfast for the next day!) and each had its own unique theme with accompanying tastes. Our favourite of the 4? It’s a toss up between Stranger Wings and Kim Jack—which we’ll be coming back for soon.
